I’ve written this blog in response to an enquiry from one of my readers and I am hoping that the information will be useful to everybody who reads it.
You need to be careful…. and think about the material used for the doona and/or its cover.
Always check for care instructions and for colour-fastness on any labels prior to washing or soaking.
Most doonas can be washed in a washing machine. Check the washing instructions on the care tag though, just to be on the safe side.
Never soak linen or silk in hot water or bleach.
With linen, use cold water to loosen dirt, and NapiSan to lift stubborn stains. This should be followed with a cold machine wash before hanging out to air-dry.
Do place your doona (and pillows) in the sun or dryer, for 5-10 minutes each week to remove moisture and fluff them up!
Care of Silk Doonas:
Never hand or machine wash your Silk doona.
I would recommend that you always use a removable white cotton cover - this can then be washed more regularly.
A properly cared for silk doona should never need cleaning, but if it does require some cleaning, then it must be dry cleaned.
A good time to air your Silk doona is when it feels heavy……… natural sunlight will draw out the moisture and restore the fluffiness to the doona.
Here Are Some Important Tips:
Don’t forget to sun your mattress, doona and pillows every few months to reduce the chance of bed mites.
Doonas and pillows should be dry-cleaned annually.
For proper deep cleaning of your bedding…. it is important that they move freely whilst washing.
If your machine at home isn’t big enough to handle a doona, don’t panic. Your local self-serve laundrette will have a large capacity machine.
Laundrettes and Specialist Cleaners have high capacity Laundry and Dry Cleaning machines just for this type of job!
If you’re not sure you want to clean your bedding and pillows yourself either at home or at the local laundrette….. then locate your local area’s Specialist Cleaners who do cleanse pillows, bedding and doonas (regardless of whether they are polyester, wool, feather or down filled)… and they do know exactly what they are doing.
To retain the fluffiness in a doona, I recommend regular airing in the sun.
Every night the human body expels about 200cc of moisture.
This is why natural sunlight will draw out the moisture and restore the fluffiness to the doona.
If you do decide to wash the doona yourself…. then for the best results, I recommend using a woolwash for doonas.
Realistically you only need to wash your doona around every six months, or seasonally, take it to the drycleaners.
However you should try and air it and give it a good shake at least every fortnight.
Natural cleaning methods allow you to clean in ways which are less harmful to ourselves, our families and the environment.
For general cleaning around the house there are two essentials you should always have on hand: bicarb and white vinegar.
If you’re not a fan of some of the chemical-laden laundry cleaning products that you find in your local shopping centres, then you can easily make your own from a selection of easy to obtain ingredients.
You will discover your laundry will be clean and fresh….as well as probably saving you money.
This is a good “all purpose” home made washing solution. You may wish to use the following natural cleaning solution for your doona.
Green Cleaning Laundry Solution:
You can make it up and store the solution in resealable jars for convenience. You will only require two cups of this solution for an average wash.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup flakes of pure soap
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon of eucalyptus oil
9L of hot water
Method:
In a saucepan add soap and soda to a litre of the water and bring to the boil, stirring as you do so. Once the ingredients have dissolved add the vinegar and essential oil and stir thoroughly.
Use two buckets and pour four litres of hot water into each. Divide the mixture in the saucepan into each of the buckets. Give a gentle stir, leave to cool, then decant into large jars or resealable containers.
Note:
This solution can also be used to treat stains. Just pour solution directly onto the stain, leave for five minutes, then put the garment into the wash.

I’ve recently been asked about remedies for dealing with very “tough” toenails and how difficult they can be to cut! This is actually something that everybody is going to have to cope with as they become older.
Perhaps you may have heard the stories of people using tinsnips and sandpaper discs on an electric hand held drill to combat this problem…..and with great success I’m told! I’m not recommending these methods as solutions to anybody.
Apart from attending an expensive salon and having a pedicure, the following information just might assist those of you who are having to deal with this problem right now….
You may not be aware that both hand and toe nails should be filed as often as possible, instead of cut or clipped. However, it’s also important to realise that sometimes nails (especially toe nails) need to be cut.
When nails are too hard and difficult to cut, try:
(a) soaking them in warm water with a little bit of salt added in order to soften them before cutting.
(b) prior to going to bed, soaking them in warm water, rubbing moisteriser into the toe nails, then slipping your feet in socks overnight to soften the nail. Have a shower in the morning and then file or cut your toe nails.
Most nail problems can be prevented purely by careful trimming of the toenails themselves. Many people tend to trim toenails far too short. Commonly recommended toenail clippers make it easy to do this if they are not used with great care.
Try using a pair of large bandage scissors…..these are very efficient in trimming tough nails. They are about 7 inches overall, and give great control when used for nail trimming.
It is important to note that you should NEVER attempt to try to cut hard, dry nails - they will splinter and break!
Always soak nails to soften them before cutting, no matter what tool you use.
A perfect time for nail trimming is immediately after a bath or soak in a spa or hot tub. (Which is a perfect reason for a nice, relaxing soak - in case you needed an “excuse” to pamper yourself!)
Toenails must always be trimmed straight across - never rounded to match the shape or curve of the end of the toe. Remember to trim toenails with curved corners is inviting trouble!
